Ultimate Speed Reader is a basic but easy-to-use accelerated-reading application. It doesn't quite compare to our top-ranked speed-reading software, with fewer exercises, less reading material and limited user accounts. However, the software effective improves reading speed and includes interesting exercises that supplement its lessons.
Ultimate Speed Reader is comprised of six levels designed to increase your visual perception, improve your peripheral acuity and enhance your memory, all of which yield faster reading and better comprehension skills. It is one of the few applications on our speed-reading software lineup that doesn't use the flash technique, where groups of words are flashed on your screen to increase the eye's fixation span. Instead, the software primarily uses highlighted word groups: the full text is displayed, with groups of words bolded as you read along. Highlighted word groups are a proven method for teaching speed reading, but so is flash, and we would like to see both offered in the speed-reading software.
In addition to its six-level training program, the speed-reading software includes an eye game, paced reading, timed reading and newspaper reading. You can practice any of these at your leisure to supplement the training program. Eye strengthening plays a vital role in learning how to read faster, as it increases your peripheral vision and fixation span. We are pleased that Ultimate Speed Reader hasn't neglected this integral part of speed-reading. We also liked the newspaper reading exercise, which teaches you how to speed-read vertical columns of text, rather than horizontal lines.
Ultimate Speed Reader is designed for both children and adults, though it only allows one user per license. The software does not designate specific reading levels or grades, but you can manually adjust the words-per-minute (WPM) rate and choose age-appropriate reading material for each user.
In terms of reading material, the speed-reading software includes only book passages, no full eBooks. Unfortunately, these passages are your only option for reading material in Ultimate Speed Reader; you cannot import your own documents or web text into the speed-reading software.
Ultimate Speed Reader may lack versatile options for reading material and multiple user accounts, but it is decent speed-reading software. We especially liked the extra practice exercises and activities; its eye game, newspaper reading and paced reading will all assist in your efforts to become a faster, more efficient reader.
Useful eye strengthening and newspaper reading exercises supplement Ultimate Speed Reader's training program.
Only one user is allowed, and book passages are the only reading material you can use in the software.
If you don't care what type of text you read during training, Ultimate Speed Reader is decent speed-reading software.
